Domenico Libri is Director of Research at the CNRS, working at the Institute Jacques Monodin Paris. He has worked on alternative splicing for his PhD at the Pasteur Institute, France, and on the mechanism of splicing for his post-doc in Brandeis University, USA. As an independent group leader he studied mRNA export in yeast and RNA quality control. Together with two other groups, he first described the existence of cryptic non-coding transcriptsproduced by pervasive transcription, and studied the mechanism of their production and their function.

Abstract:

Transcription termination is essential, not only to define the 3’-end of transcripts and their fate, but also to prevent interference between adjacent regions of transcription and between transcription and other cellular events. Termination is also one of the main strategies that the cell employs to control pervasive/hidden transcription. In the last ten years or so it has become clear that transcription occurs largely outside of annotated regions, which produces a wealth of non-coding RNAs, some of which are rapidly degraded. I will present our work on the control of pervasive transcription by transcription termination mechanisms and on the coordination between termination and RNA degradation.
